Fire Extinguisher Classes:
Class A– Wood/paper/trash; for fires involving ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and cloth. These extinguishers use water or foam to smother the fire.
Class B– Flammable liquids; for fires involving flammable liquids such as gasoline and oil. These extinguishers use dry chemical agents to smother the fire.
Class C– Electrical equipment; for fires involving energized electrical equipment. These extinguishers use non-conductive extinguishing agents such as CO2 to suffocate the fire.
Class K– Cooking oils & fats; for fires involving cooking oils and fats typically found in commercial kitchens. These extinguishers use wet chemical agents to smother the fire and cool down the oil to prevent reignition.
Class D– Combustible metals; for fires involving combustible metals such as magnesium and titanium. These extinguishers use dry powder agents to smother the fire.
NOTE: Each class of fire extinguisher is designed to be used on specific types of fires and should not be used on other types of fires as it may not be effective or even make the fire worse.
Fire Extinguisher Inspections

- Properly tagged and inspected
- Proper distribution
- Fully operational devices
- Appropriate device for the area
- Damaged extinguishers are replaced
